Unaccompanied Melodies

Unaccompanied melodies can have a fantastic effect in a movie when placed cleverly. The “lonely” instrument or section filling up the musical space has a beautiful and haunting quality and can either create an extreme intimacy which is for example great for “tearing up” moments but on the other hand can create a strong sense of loneliness when placed in an appropriate context. It can also be a great entrance to a cue that eventually evolves to incorporating the whole orchestra. In general, slower melodies and gestures work better with this than fast and busy melodies.
